Curriculum Highlights

Grade Five Math
- identifying number patterns and pattern rules
- using patterns to solve problems
- using variables to describe a pattern
- using a variable to write an equation
- solving equations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (with a variable)

Grade Six Math
- completing and solving input and output charts
- representing patterns in tables
- using variables to describe patterns
- plotting points on a coordinate grid
- drawing the graph of a pattern
- understanding equality
- keeping equations balanced

Writing/Reading
- focusing on peer feedback with our story beginnings by using shared criteria for success
- comparing and contrasting the organization and content of narrative (story) vs functional (newspaper) writing 
- understanding the form of a newspaper article and identifying important facts that identify 5Ws and offer extra information to the audience-analyzing newspaper layouts-comparing newspaper articles (how do different authors tell the same story)
-using reading strategies to strengthen comprehension of fiction text
-continuing to choose 'just right' books and using our Reader's Response book charts to make sure we are reading a variety of genres

Science
- learning about objects in the day and night sky
- sky science subtopics that we're learning about right now include: objects that emit and reflect light, location and apparent movement of stars and constellations, rotating vs revolving of the Earth, reasons for direct and indirect light in the Northern Hemisphere

Social Studies
- exploring how local government works through reading, writing and representing
- local government subtopics that we're learning about right now include: municipal services, taxes, bylaws, citizen participation, councillors and motions, forums, urban local governments, rural local governments, municipal local governments, First Nations reserves and Metis settlements

Phys. Ed.
- badminton skills
- cooperative and competitive badminton games/tasks
- sportsmanship lessons woven throughout lessons (related to communication, fair play, leadership, teamwork, effort)
- Grade 5/6 Badminton Club (badminton tournaments) will be run by Ms. Hurst and Mr. Jassar. The club will be held for three Wednesdays in February. The letter/form was sent home today to interested students.

Health/Life Skills
- class meetings to discuss classroom concerns/worries, help create student-generated solutions to problems, as well as provide compliments and positive words to each others
- mini-lessons around kindness, positive attitudes, advocating for yourself and your learning (with peers and Ms. Hurst
- reviewing the importance of communicating concerns and feelings directly to the person, right away, rather than letting concerns/feelings 'brew'
- dental presentations will be at the end of the month

Music
- drumming with One World Drum
- playing ukuleles with Ms. Enns
